LUDLOW — Chief Daniel Valadas is pleased to announce that the Ludlow Police Department recently used grant funding to participate in National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
As part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which is observed in April, the Ludlow Police Department recently participated in a month-long traffic enforcement campaign which focused on distracted driving.
Officers worked in pairs and were stationed around Ludlow to issue pamphlets or warnings to residents who were using electronic devices while operating motor vehicles.
As a result of this educational initiative Ludlow Police made a total of 72 traffic stops, 54 being drivers who were observed violating the Massachusetts “hands-free” law.
The department received funding for this campaign from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) Office of Grants and Research.
“This initiative is a way for us to remind residents that it is illegal to use an electronic device while driving,” said Chief Valadas. “Our department is committed to the safety and well-being of our residents and this initiative was to help mitigate accidents and educate our residents on the dangers of being distracted while driving.”
