Lieutenant David Irwin | (413) 583-8305 ext.2214
The Patrol Division provides the bulk of services rendered by the Ludlow Police Department and is staffed by a majority of the personnel within the Department. The Patrol Division is comprised of uniformed officers, assigned to motor vehicle, bicycle, or directed foot patrol activities, who provide traditional police services to the community while operating on a continuous 24-hour/7-day-a-week schedule.
The Patrol Division is tasked with a myriad number of duties and responsibilities to promote the stability and safety of the community. These include general and specific patrol functions consisting of, but not limited to, the following: traffic enforcement; motor vehicle crash response; directed bicycle patrol; peace-keeping details; emergency call response; domestic violence intervention; preliminary and follow-up investigations; warrant service; summons service; alarm response; addressing quality-of-life concerns, and conducting welfare checks. In 2021 the Ludlow Police Department logged 17,455 calls for service. Of these requests, there were 1,499 investigations/incidents, 568 reportable motor vehicle accidents, and 512 arrests or summons.
Patrol Officers are assigned to designated areas (patrol districts) throughout the Town of Ludlow in marked and unmarked patrol vehicles. Their vehicles are equipped with emergency lighting and siren, radio systems, a computer terminal, and a variety of other Law Enforcement tools and rescue equipment.
All Officers – regardless of their assignments, designations, and specialty units – undergo a rigorous field training program and are fully trained through the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee. Officers must meet training expectations and demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of Law Enforcement. The Ludlow Police Department is also certified through the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (M.P.A.C.), which ensures the Department is engaging in the best practices of the profession and fosters a higher level of pride, professionalism, and commitment in the organization.
The Patrol Officer is typically the first officer the community sees and encounters, addresses a wide variety of problems and citizen concerns, and aims to please with dignity and respect while rendering a professional service in each interaction.
